Prescription Drug Disposal

A five-month investigation by the Associated Press that found low levels of pharmaceutical drugs, including mood stabilizers and anabolic steroids, in the drinking water of at least 41 million Americans.
Much of this contamination comes from prescription drugs. People take their medications, absorb some of those drugs, but the rest of it is excreted and flushed down the toilet where it eventually reaches the water supply.
Now, experts are finding that these “waste drugs” are having an adverse effect on the environment, and maybe more than a few people. Read more

USA TODAY Article on Rx Errors

The nation’s most widely circulated daily newspaper, USA Today, published an article today concerning an investigation into pharmacist workload and prescription errors.
The investigation reviewed policies and alleged errors at rivals Walgreens and CVS, the nation’s two largest drugstore chains, which fill nearly one-third of all retail prescriptions nationwide. It included a review of scores of lawsuits, as well as pharmacy board disciplinary actions in 10 states.

FDA Threatens Tucson Pharmacy

In mid-2006, the Arizona Republic published a report on an issue involving a battle over natural (compounded) versus synthetic (manufactured) hormone replacement therapy.
The issue involved a complaint to the FDA by the pharmaceutical manufacturer Wyeth, as to whether or not compounded “bioidentical” hormones should carry the same health warnings as manufactured hormones, and if they should also be federally regulated. Read more

2007 Ethics and Honesty Gallup Poll
December 22, 2007

The 2007 Annual Gallup Poll rating the public’s perception of honesty and ethics in 22 various categories of professionals was just released.
Once again, pharmacists were one of the top-rated professionals, ranking third behind nurses and grade school teachers in ratings of “very high” or “high” standards. Read more
